Square Roots Festival Music

Artists to Perform July 12-14 in Historic Lincoln Square

Chicago, Il. (May 21, 2013) – The music lineup has just been revealed for the second annual Square Roots Festival in Chicago, July 12-14.  More than 35 acts will perform across four different stages, both indoors and outdoors. Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside, Fatoumata Diawara, Savoy Family Cajun Band, and Glenn Jones, are among the artists that will be featured.  Featured kids music performers include Wiggleworms Outdoors, Mr. Singer and Dreamtree Shakers.  The full musical lineup, which will be updated daily, can be found at squareroots.org.

All of the bands for this year’s festival were hand-selected by the Old Town School of Folk Music, the venerable, 55 year old Chicago cultural institution long noted for their music curatorial skills.  “Music has always been, and will always be, such a big part of the Lincoln Square neighborhood,” said Alderman Ameya Pawar.  “Tens of thousands of residents and families are expected to gather at this event to hear musicians from around the world as well as their own backyard.”

The Square Roots festival will also feature a number of interactive activities, making this event a truly unique one in Chicago.  These include jams, workshops, free classes, kids crafts, dance lessons, an instrument “petting zoo” and the 11th annual Fiddle Contest.  More than 30 locally brewed craft beers on tap – including Lagunitas, 5 Rabbit, Founders, Hinterland and Virtue Cider – will be served, as well as delicious food from neighborhood restaurants in and around Lincoln Square.
